Essential oils are volatile
and odourful substances which are produced by certain plants.
The usual method of obtaining
an essential oil, is by steam distillation , an invention originating
from the tenth century and conceived by a certain Ibn Sina, also known
as Avicenne.
Although the process has
evolved since the tenth century, the principal remains the same.
Inside the still, steam is
passed over the given plant, the result of which is then gathered in
a container (kept at room temperature) to receive the condensed liquid.
The liquid soon separates into floral water and essential oil, due to
the difference in density.
Steam distillation is recognised
as an organic procedure.
